Hard Drives: Hitachi Global Storage Technologies

Hitachi specializes in internal and external storage, as one of it's core businesses, also investing into a number of other products and services, including: software, servers, computers, projectors, ATMs, LCDs, automotive products, digital media and consumer products, elevators, escalators, nuclear, thermal and hydroelectric power plants, financial services, materials and components, etc. They provide internal hard drives for desktop and mobile computers, as well as specialized hard drives serving automotive and industrial functions. These drives can be optimized for self-encryption, surveillance and media storage. They also produce external hard drives that provide the user with a mobile solution.

Their most impressive drive is the Deskstar 7K1000. With a capacity of 1 terabyte and a speed of 7200 RPM, it has a lot of performance. It also has an 8.5ms read time and a 9.2ms write time, letting you download and retrieve information quickly. The interface is a Serial ATA 3.0Gb/s. It has three advanced low power modes, reducing power consumption with improved power efficiency. This could work well for video editing, gaming or using as a multimedia storage center.

DVD Writers: Samsung

Along with optical disk drives, Samsung makes a variety of other business products including: IT business products, printers, professional displays, telecommunication, and set-top box. In particular, they also carry semiconductors, LCD panels, flash drives, hard disk drive, optical disk drives, solid state drives, and storage applications.

They have a external station hard drive, the HX-DT020EB (or the Story Station 3.0) that has 2 terabytes of data storage with a transfer speed of up to 5 Gbps. Unfortunately, the inclusion of USB 3.0 is included at an additional $100. You would have to determine if upgrading from the world of USB 2.0 is a necessary change. It is designed to dissipate heat to always keep the drive cool, even during continuous data backup. It's small, with a length of 19 cm, a height of 4 cm and only weighs about 2 lbs. As far as the reviews go, it appears to be the top of its class making the $270 price tag reasonable if theses specifications are needed.

Flash Memory Drives: SanDisk

SanDisk is the self proclaimed "Global leader in flash memory cards." They offer memory cards for mobile devices, cameras, DSLRs, camcorders, computers, music players and game systems. If you need to move information from an electronic device or store data externally, San Disk should have the solution that you need. They also make solid state drives, readers, music and video players. They are a global company, becoming the world's largest supplier of flash memory data storage.

One of their latest creations is the Ultra Backup USB Flash Drive with a backup button on the actual drive, to provide an ease in backing up files. The most storage available is 64 GB, but at a price of $277.99. At this price, you need to determine if the portability of a flash drive is needed, since the external hard drive with 2 TB of storage was selling for the same price. Also, with 64 GB back up you needed data, since my laptop can hold about 220 GB though I'm only using about 20 GB total for all my documents and media files. You would be able to secure access to your data through a password.
